  • An interview with Korbinian Engstler

  • The new R Raymon AirRay combines the typical playfulness of a trail bike with a compact drive unit and ideal battery capacity. Pro rider Korbinian Engstler was one of the first to put the AirRay through its paces and we spoke to him about the new models:

The AirRay marks R Raymon's début in the relatively new Light eMTBs category. What do you think about it?

I find it so cool that R Raymon is going down this path. The brand is clearly demonstrating its innovative spirit and that standing still is never an option. Not everyone has a Light eMTB in their range, and the AirRays not only look great, but they're incredibly agile and unbelievably fun on any terrain. I can't wait to see what the customers will make of them.

For which types of rider are the Light eMTBs the perfect companion?

It's pretty much impossible to define specific target groups. The AirRays are basically for anyone who finds a normal e-bike too heavy and who doesn't constantly ride right to the max. This is where the AirRay can truly play to its strengths! It's not too heavy, it's not too light, and the battery easily has enough range. We could see all this in Sölden, where we set out on some really long treks and were always on the go. At the same time the Light eMTB is perfect for tearing it up in the bike park as it rides virtually like a normal bike. The differences are barely noticeable, and everything is pretty well balanced, including a low centre of gravity and good grip in the corners.

Where's your favourite place to head out with your AirRay?

Sölden is my favourite place to go riding by far, it's just got everything! An easy pedal up or up with the lift at lunchtime, afternoons spent in the bike park – I love it.

    "The AirRays are proper all-rounders!"

The campaign slogan is "Change your view". How have the AirRays changed your views?

They've convinced me that at the end of the day an e-bike really can do pretty much everything. The AirRays are proper all-rounders! Whether on the bike park or out touring for the day, the AirRay is like an enduro and e-bike rolled into one.

What are the strengths of the AirRays?

It's no accident that the three models feature neither the strongest motor torque nor the maximum battery capacity. Instead, the emphasis was on harmonising the three key pillars of motor, battery and weight. The result is an eMTB that's well-balanced and super agile. Which is precisely where its strengths lie!

Do you think that Light eMTBs will be more a flash in the pan or are they here to stay?

Light eMTBs are here for good, there's no doubt about that. They are still a relatively young technology, but I am supremely confident the bikes will continue to become lighter and their motors ever more powerful.
